Preply French Lessons: How to Remember Your Tutor’s Corrections

Partage cet article

If you are learning French on Preply, you may have heard about Lesson Insights, the AI summaries that give learners feedback on vocabulary, grammar and speaking after a lesson. It sounds like what every learner needs, and there is one detail that matters a lot for you.

Lesson Insights is for English lessons only

According to Preply’s own help center, Lesson Insights is only available for English lessons at the moment, and both the tutor and the learner have to turn it on. So if you are an English speaker learning French, you don’t get this feedback, even though you probably need it just as much.

What usually happens after a French lesson

You leave the lesson with a general feeling, something like “I struggled with the past tense again”, and maybe a few words your tutor typed in the chat. That feeling is too vague to work with, because it doesn’t tell you which sentences were wrong or what you should have said.

A lot of learners deal with this by booking more lessons, and they end up paying more without really fixing the mistakes that keep coming back.

How to build your own lesson feedback

You can get detailed feedback on a French lesson yourself, as long as you have a transcript.

Ask your tutor first if they are comfortable with you recording the lesson. Most tutors say yes when you explain that you want to review your mistakes. Then use a transcription tool to turn the recording into text. Some tools, like Lesson Transcriber, are built for browser based classrooms such as Preply and give you a transcript with speaker labels.

Once you have the transcript, you need something that reads it the way a good teacher would.

What LanguageMate App does with your transcript

LanguageMate App is the tool I created for this step. You paste the transcript, you say which speaker you are, and in about 2 minutes you get an analysis that goes much further than a summary.

It gives you an estimated level, such as A2 or B1, with a short explanation of why, and your 3 priorities for the week with your own sentences and their corrected versions. It also counts your mistakes per 100 words, so after a few lessons you can see on a curve whether you are really improving, which a general feeling can never tell you. Imagine a lesson where you spoke 1,200 words and the app made 36 remarks. That is 3 mistakes per 100 words, and if the number is 2.6 after your next lesson, you know you are moving in the right direction.

Then you get the full conversation rewritten as if 2 native speakers were talking. This is the part learners find most useful, because you see that a sentence can be grammatically correct and still sound like a translation from English. Next to each line there is a small question mark, and when you don’t understand why something was rewritten, you click on it and ask your question.

Your transcript stays private, and the flashcards made from your own sentences are waiting for you at the end.

Why this fits well with a tutor

This doesn’t replace your tutor. It makes the lesson more valuable, because you arrive at the next one knowing exactly which mistakes you want to work on, and your tutor can spend the time on conversation.

It works in French and in English, so it doesn’t matter that Preply’s own feature is limited to English lessons.

After your next Preply lesson, paste the transcript into LanguageMate App and see how much feedback was hiding in 1 hour of conversation. The 7 day trial includes 1 free analysis. After the trial, it is 29 € per month for 4 full conversation analyses or 39 € per month for 8.
