Talkpal is an AI conversation app that covers a large number of languages, with chat, roleplays and debates. It has a free tier and a low monthly price, so it is easy to try.
If you are reading this, you are probably looking for something Talkpal doesn’t give you. For many intermediate learners, that missing thing is deep feedback on real conversations.
What reviewers say about Talkpal’s feedback
Talkpal marks corrections while you chat. Independent reviews published in 2026 point out that the feedback stays quite light, with little analysis once the conversation is over, and that the content can feel thin for advanced learners. Features change quickly, so check the current version yourself, but the general idea holds: it is a practice partner more than an analysis tool.
Practice and analysis are 2 different needs
It helps to separate these 2 needs, because most learners mix them up.
Practice means producing French, as often as possible. An AI chat partner can help with that.
Analysis means looking back at what you said and understanding how a native speaker would have said it. This is where real progress happens for intermediate learners, because at your level the problem is rarely a lack of practice. The problem is that you keep repeating the same mistakes and nobody shows them to you clearly.
What LanguageMate App does differently
LanguageMate App doesn’t talk with you. It takes the transcript of a conversation you had with a tutor or a language partner and analyzes it in depth.
The first thing you see is a number: your mistakes per 100 words, next to the number from your previous conversation. Under it, your remarks are sorted by category, for example word for word translations from English, verb tenses, vocabulary or articles, so you know which kind of mistake is really holding you back.
The app makes a clear difference between a real mistake and a sentence that is correct but that a native speaker would say another way. Those sentences are kept in their own section, which matters a lot at an intermediate level, because sounding natural is a different job from being correct.
Here are 2 examples at a B1 level. If you say “j’attends pour le bus”, that is a real mistake, a direct translation of “I’m waiting for the bus”, and the app corrects it to “j’attends le bus”. If you say “hier j’étais très fatigué parce que j’ai beaucoup travaillé”, nothing is wrong, but it is the kind of simple sentence a child could say, and the app shows you how an adult would put it, for example “hier j’étais épuisé, j’ai eu une journée chargée”, without counting it as a mistake.
You also get your 3 priorities for the week, the full conversation rewritten as if 2 native speakers were talking, flashcards built from your own sentences, and an estimate of your level, such as A2 or B1.
It only does French and English, on purpose. I preferred to do 2 languages well than to cover 50.
Who should switch
If you are learning French, you already have real conversations, and you feel stuck at the same level, then more AI chat is probably not what you need. You need to see your own mistakes written down.
Take the transcript of your last real conversation and paste it into LanguageMate App to see the difference. The 7 day trial includes 1 free analysis. After the trial, it is 29 € per month for 4 full conversation analyses or 39 € per month for 8.
